Creative Lighting Philosophy

At the heart of our teaching lies Creative Lighting—a philosophy of image creation that positions light as the fundamental element in imagery. This approach cultivates the ability to perceive and understand light, much like a photographer or cinematographer, while also appreciating the artistry involved in image creation as a painter would.

Our philosophy champions the artist's vision, prioritizing it over technical knowledge. It is an approach that can be applied to a wide array of artistic and commercial challenges. By researching the mysteries and properties of light, you have the power to unlock unlimited creative potential and take your work to the next level.

The Birth of Creative Lighting

Creative Lighting originated in Cityscape Digital's Shoreditch studio, the innovative brainchild of Nikos Nikolopoulos, then CGI Director, and Creative Director Damian Fennell. After many creative discussions in the studio, they pursued the creation of visuals that stood out for their beauty and exceptional quality.

Turning to cinema for inspiration, the stunning world of cinematography began to present them with new possibilities. After extensive research into the work of Roger Deakins, Pinterest boards, sketches, and 3D tests, an in-house workshop was born: Creative Lighting vs. Mundane Realism. From there, the philosophy took on a life of its own.
